Buying Lumber and Dreaming Big

Buying Lumber

I've been hinting at a major life change in my posts this week and I think it's time to let the cat out of the bag.

Michael and I are in the process of buying our first home together. We are 20 days away from closing and we are SO EXCITED!!!

It has been a process, let me tell you! We thought we were prepared. We had spreadsheets and countless hours of research under our belts. No one told us about the flurry of emails to respond to, phone calls to make, and legal documents to sign in the weeks after we placed our bid. There are deadlines and more deadlines. And you have like 5 people going through the process with you, a lawyer, your Realtor, your lender, your home insurance company, home inspector, etc. We weathered applying for the mortgage, passing the home inspection, the appraisal... And we've begun sorting through a lifetime of belongings to pack for our new home. It has been hectic and exciting and stressful all at once and we are learning a ton about each other as we go through this process.

In the middle of all of this, Michael and I decided we want to build a portion of our furniture from scratch. We studied plans and spent countless hours at like 5 different hardware stores on a never-ending hunt for perfectly straight pieces of wood. I was beginning to wonder if it was really feasible for us to build everything we need before we close on the house. And then, yesterday, Michael started cutting. I came home from work and we assembled a little bedside table together. The dogs ran through the sawdust and and explored the workshop while we sawed and measured and drilled. And at the end of the night, we'd made great progress on our new bedroom set. We still have a lot to build, and so much more work to do, but we are accomplishing something every day and dreaming big about our life together in our future home.

You can look forward to a lot of home themed posts in the coming months!

Until next time,
